NEWS

September 2, 2014.

THE 105-YEAR-OLD WHO NEEDS MUZZLING FOR MEDICAL TREATMENT.

Sticking needles in a 105-year-old yields sprightly results - but it's not without its risk for Richard Allport: and that can mean muzzling his patient.

Richard, a vet for more than 40 years, has been treating a Jack Russell terrier for a spinal problem for five years - and Alfie is 19-and-a-half-years old, the equivalent of nearly 106 years if he were a human, and way beyond the 12 years average life expectancy for the breed.

"Alfie has a long-standing spinal problem, and I treat him with acupuncture - and he's the only patient I have to muzzle: he's a determined little chap who visits me from time-to-time when he's a little wobbly, but who perks up quickly and is trotting around, bright and mobile, after each session," said Richard, who treats Alfie at Bayswater Referral Centre.

"His longevity is testament to the love and attention from his family, a sensible diet and good exercise regime.

"His response to treatment is testament to natural medicine. I think I'd be doing him more harm than good pumping him full of traditional drugs which might overwhelm his system.

"Traditional drugs and treatments are very effective for the right patient at the right moment, but I would urge pet owners to try natural medicine whenever possible - they'd be pleasantly surprised by the results, and will instantly recognise the absence of drug-related discomfort, particularly in older and more sensitive or vulnerable pets."
